Protecting Filters

The Protecting Filters Option in Oracle BI or Oracle Analytics Cloud is usually not used or needed. However, it may be required when using multiple Filters on the same Column (Subject area Field) and using Action Links as Drill-down navigation or in conjunction with Dashboard Prompts.

image

The following is an example scenario without protecting the Filters: On the Detailed Report, the following Operators are defined:

When making the Drill-down from the Top Report using the Action-link Drill-down navigation:

image

The Filter Operators are overwritten by the internal Background process for navigating to the Detail Report (compare Operator which is “is equal to / is in” which should have been “is less than or equal to” from Report definition):

After selecting “Protect Filter” the Operator is protected from the Background navigation process and the intended Operator is used on the Detailed Report:

This feature is also described in the following article:

configuring Master Detail Analysis

An Analysis within BICS can utilize Master Detail linking. This allows to update a second Table or Graph based on a click within the Master Report. The below example shows this for the OOTB Sample Dashboard:

image

Once a user clicks into the Master Report (Step 1) the linked Analysis are also updated to reflect the context of the clicked figure (Step 2 +3). This can be configured by sending an event from the Measure column of the Master Report to the receiving Graph (Step 2) and receiving Table (Step 3) of the receiving Analysis.

On the Master Report, the Measure needs to send the event on a specific “channel”:

While the receiving Report Graph and Table need to be configured to listen on the respective “channel”:

This also requires to expose the linked columns as Graph or Tables Prompts:

Otherwise, the data will not be restricted on the linked Analysis!

Issue when using Report prompts within OTBI Answers and OTBI Fusion

A strange Issue exists with OTBI in terms of Report prompts. If a User adds a prompt directly within the Report, the prompts appear correctly within BI Answers. However, if the same Report is opened from within Oracle Cloud, the prompts are not shown to the User.

Prompts added to Report:

Prompts appearing in BI Answers of OTBI when running (opening) the Report:

However, when opening the same Report from Fusion (OTBI embedded) the Report executes without showing the prompts, even though the prompt has been specified as “required”:

When clicking on the “Edit” button of the Fusion Catalogue Browser, the following warning message is being displayed:

The standard provides prompted Analysis usually of Type “Dashboard”, hence this Issue is not applying for standard content. E.g. the Analysis on Department details also provides filters as Dashboard prompts:
